There are PTFs for V4R2 and V4R3, which provide a function called disk
balancing" - DSKBAL command.
This command will schedule a process for next IPL, which will move around
data between disk drives to make a load more uniform. You can control how
long this process should take each IPL (or run to completion). This is very
usefull, when new drives are added.
In V4R4 this will be a standard function in SST/DST.

Best regards

Piece of cake.

1. Backup your system. Go SAVE - Option 21
2. Physically Add DASD
3. Manual IPL to DST
4. Add DASD to ASP and Start Raid 5 protection - All in 1 IPL
5. Fairly LONG IPL

Assuming that you are adding just enough DASD to cover the RAID-5 penalty,
you will get a very acceptable scatter load. As you add more, the scatter
load will be worse.

BTW, V4R4 was pre-announced (This means it's OK to talk about.) this
morning by IBM. There are new disk scatter functions provided!

Al
