I think this bit from the RPG manual explains things:

"The following rules apply to keyword OVERLAY:

1.  The name parameter must be the name of a subfield defined previously in
 the current data structure,
    or the name of the current data structure."

Yes dbfld1 was used in a C-spec. However, dbfld1 was also the field I was
overlaying, so that alone should be sufficient to cause the compiler to
tokenize the field, IMHO.

  Is dbfld1 referenced anywhere else in your code, or just on the %size()?
I think that the compiler doesn't include a token for "unused" fields.  Try
a bogus Eval dbfld1=dbfld1 to make the field "used."  Maybe that's why
putting it explicitly in a DS works...
