Chris,

 My standard technique is to create a Logical Data Area with the jobs name.  
The job locks this DA
(ALCOBJ).  To see if it is active attempt to lock the DA exclusively.  If you 
get the lock it's not
active (remember to drop the lock in this case(DLCOBJ).)  If the job terminates 
any possible way,
the lock is gone.
