we bought a 3480/3490e tape drive about 2 years ago that looked like a 9348.  I 
lost 1/2 my hair the two
months it took the vendor to get it to work!  we shipped it back to them twice 
for tweaking, and it
didn't work, and finally they sent a tech person out.

but she did a great job, and the drive has worked well since.  but since it was 
a look like deal, the
microcode in the tape drive had to be tweaked just so...
