3570 Tape Drive

Has anyone out there with a 3570 tape drive experienced the following?

Occassionally we get a check condition on our 3570 tape drive (ex.
tension dropped).  We unload and reload the tape until the drive becomes
ready.  The next AS/400 command issued to use the tape drive returns a
"device equipment check".  However, if we then issue the same command
again, the command is successful.  It appears as though the 3570 is not
clearing the first message to the AS/400?  

Any ideas?  TIA
