You can think of APIs as external subroutines. 
You don't need to know anything about the
code, just the parameter interface and the
job to be done.  APIs are becoming more 
prevalent on the AS400 because IBM is 
issuing them to allow the programmer to 
perform more OS400 functions programmatically, 
like list active jobs or find the IP address
of the PC.
