Thanks Dan.  That's pretty much the way I thought (and hoped) it worked.  I
had visions yesterday of all these invalid backup tapes being created and
sent off-site and only finding out they were invalid when I tried to
recover from them.

Good points.  When ever possible, I do all that kind of thing on Saturday
night as part of my week-end save routine.  I do a complete save of my file
library, do all change control implementations and reorgs and then do a
SAVCHGOBJ.
