I was confused by the ILE stuff myself when I first started learning it. I 
picked
up a lot at COMMON, mostly from Bob Cozzi, Jon Paris and Susan Gantner.
Jon Paris is really great with this stuff and he is very patient! There are also
several people who do seminars covering this topic. The details in the manuals
make a lot more sense after somebody explains to you what it means.

As far as a book goes, I have a copy of Cozzi's book that I keep at my desk.
It's the only one I use besides the IBM soft copy manuals.
