Hey Folks! The US Thanksgiving holiday is over, and it's time again for our annual year- end predictions for the AS/400 marketplace. I'd like to give everyone 30 days this year, so that more thought (especially on _my_ part) can be give prior to responding. I just finished reviewing last year's batch and boy, was it a hoot! Suffice it to say that my own 1996 record of 8/10 predictions coming true in 1997 will receive absolutely _NO_ competition (although some have a "correct from a certain point of view" aspect) from my 1997 predictions for 1998! Ok, Lou G. didn't resign. Native Notes didn't fail, but it didn't exactly set the world on fire, either. JAVA didn't take off like I thought it would, although IBM _DID_ tout it as "The Language of the Future" at both COMMON's. On the high side, Network Stations _DID_ pretty much suck. IBM announced several hardware platforms to "fill the gaps", unfortunately most were NetFinity. The US DOJ is _STILL_ working on MicroSoft. With the announcement of the discontinuance of support for OS/2 on the IPCS I guess my (dreaded) prediction that OS/2 would "bite the dust" was, unfortunately, true. Still 3 years to go on my Y2K prediction, although I'll expand the estimate by a year. I'll follow this note with copies of all the predictions I saved from last year. My own predictions for the coming year are going to require a little more thought... Cheers! Dean Asmussen Enterprise Systems Consulting, Inc.
