Huh? What's up with you (whoever you are)? Rule of thumb: use whatever technique is most appropriate to achieve your desired goal. To calculate arithmetic expressions, use arithmetic functions. To reorder the sequence of digits in a date, use data structures or string functions to shift the characters. Think about what you're trying to accomplish, not about saving one or two LOC. This is getting old. eric.delong@pmsi-services.com ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: RE: Date * 10000.01 Author: <MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com > at INET_WACO Date: 11/19/98 8:26 AM So would it be more efficient to do a series of alphanumeric if comparisons to perform 100 -87 --- 13 than to do a eval value=100-87 TimM@softwarejungle.com on 11/18/98 05:34:23 PM Please respond to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com@Internet To: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com@Internet cc: Subject: RE: Date * 10000.01 Neither. Simple move statements will always require fewer cycles than math. Too many programmers live in the belief that fewer code statements result in better and faster code. Often the more mundane and less "clever" methods are both faster for machines to process and easier to maintain. > -----Original Message----- > From: Rob Berendt [SMTP:rob@dekko.com] > Sent: Wednesday, November 18, 1998 3:25 PM > To: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com > Subject: Re: Date * 10000.01 > > > I strongly agree with Hans.
