When you write code keep in mind it's maintainability. Converting that file is not that hard to do in RPG, especially since the last several versions, (even OPM) have added some strong string funcctions. Who will be maintaining this code? You, who has a tutorial in VARPG and thinks it's kind of neat? A college pup who couldn't grasp the concept of a program that doesn't require someone to push a bunch of icons to run a simple batch process? A coworker who is strong in RPG on the 400? Yes, you did right to find an alternative way to try to remap the file. It would have been nice to have gotten a response like 'Client Access, if you do this-and-that option'. I can almost guarantee that you'll spend less time coding this in RPG than it would take you to: negotiate a deal with a vendor product, cut a PO, load product, learn product, try to find a real use for the product to justify the cost. I'd recommend RPG versus Monarch or something. schencd%AM_LZCH%VASELL@mr.mops.wl.com on 11/17/98 09:33:25 AM Please respond to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com@Internet To: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com@Internet cc: Subject: Re: Formatting an unformatted file :::To all, ::: :::I am going to be doing an application whereby I must read a file from a :::PC that looks like this: ::: :::ROUTE "0541" ::: <<snip>> Jeff -- You could always format it with a PC program first. An AWK program on the PC could do this. It would be VERY easy to write; EXTREMELY easy. Or VB. I don't see it as being THAT difficult on the 400 side, either. It may seem intimidating at first glance ... but think about it, and I'm sure you see that it's not as tough as it initially seems. Having done quite a bit of data collection programming, I've done a lot of this stuff -- all in RPG (NOT ILE). ILE will make it even easier. Have fun; this is the type of stuff that makes programming fun.
