  Ira, 

        There was a migration tool around a few years ago that used 5250 
as the transport vehicle and I think required a PC in the middle. This was
for S/36 --> S/38(AS/400) I think.  

        If you can find a copy around somewhere it might  be your best 
bet for the configuration you describe.
