Base OS/400 does provide the runtime support for SQL, and also interfaces to SQL functionality that are unique to AS/400. The DB2/400 Query Manager and SQL Development Kit (57xx-ST1) provides primarily for interactive SQL support and language pre-processors for RPG, C, C++, COBOL, etc. Summary information can often, and in this case can, be found in the online manuals via the Licensed Program Specifications (LPS). Do a search for SQL and then select the LPS (for V4R3, GC41-5058-02). The ability to execute imbedded SQL within an application is provided within OS/400; likewise the ability to prepare and execute SQL statements. If you wanted to use SQL directly on the system, one API which could be used would be Process Extended Dynamic SQL (QSQPRCED) which is documented in the System API Reference. There are also a variety of client/server based interfaces which provide for SQL functionality without requiring the SQL Development Kit. The Development Kit does provide however a more user friendly environment than directly coding to the system APIs. I use it quite often for the quick and dirty interactive tests that are sometimes useful to demonstrate a point. Bruce > >I do not have the SQL development kit.
