Alison, I thought there was something specific to say PC or not PC but I couldn't find it. Maybe there's something better than what I have below. In RPG, you can use the File Information Data Structure for the display file. There is an Open Feedback Area and an I/O Feedback Area. Within the Open Feedback Area is the Device Definition List. The I/O Feedback Area has two sections; the Common Area and the File-Dependent Feedback Area. Scan the manuals for all of these to see what there is. A good idea is to right a program and run it on a PC and a dumb workstation and compare values to see what if anything is different. You can retrieve the Device Type and perhaps you could make assumptions based on this. For example, our only two workstations are a 3197 and a 3476 and all of the PCs we have show up as either a 3179-2 or a 3197-C2. So I could hard-code (oh no) that a value of hex 26 or hex 34 for the Device Type represent the workstations and all others are PCs. Information is scattered in several books. The RPG/400 Reference manual shows you how to calculate the from and to positions of the datastructure but you need to first find out the offset and length. There's also the Data Management manual. Various tables will show you the values you need to look for. Some information is found in more than one area of the data structures. Good luck! Glenn Gundermann Ronald A.
