I think it's also fair to say that we're paying for being stupid enough
(well not you and I of course <bg>) to fall for the MS marketing hype -
again and again. IBM was somewhat hamstrung by consent decrees that limited
what they could do.  MS on the other hand used very questionable tactics to
ensure dominance.

"Certainly Mr. Compaq - we don't mind if you pre-load OS/2, as long as you
don't mind paying $X per unit of Windows shipped.  Now of course if you
only load Windows, well we'll only charge you 20% of that figure".  That's
a tough thing to sell against when profit per box is as low as it is on
PCs.
