Here's a bit of pseudo code for moving a signed number to a character
string....

/* num is a defined as 15.5 somewhere in time and space */

temp := num;

if num < 0 do /* if num is negative then do */
  temp := num * -1  /* flip sign  */
else
  temp := num
endif

/* at this point temp is the absolute value of num */

call convert_to_string(temp, char_num)  /* any number > character
                                          conversion routine  */

if num < 0 then do
   char_num = '-' || char_num  /* '-' cat:0 char_num char_num  */
endif

/* somewhere about here you'll have char_num with the character equiv of
the numeric field with a '-' prefix if it's a negative number */

Yeah, this is a bit on the the fly and I'm probably missing a few ;'s so
don't shoot me on syntax...
