EDI for AS/400

After years (like about 15) of being interested in EDI, I think we're
finally going to do it.  Our largest customer has informed us they will
be doing back door receiving in their groceries using UCS-DEX.

What do any and all of you use for your EDI?  I prefer to do it on the
AS/400 directly as opposed to PC upload/downloads.

At present, UCS-DEX will be first, but I'm sure we'll be doing it
computer-to-computer (UCS-NEX) with others soon after, so I want a
solution that can handle both.

How about communications?  Direct with each trading partner?  Or a VAN? 
Can it now be done securely over the internet?

We're currently on a 300-2042 CISC.  Thanks for any and all responses.
