Hey Imagine a company having an AS/400 and not using it for Green Screen but using it for a Web server of all things. Who would of thought ? I guess it starting not to be such an "Unlikely Candidate" John Carr ---------------------------- <Just a Snippet> http://www.techweb.com/se/directlink.cgi?VAR19980817S0021 Unlikely Candidate Although it had a proven track record with Copart, when it came to developing a Web-based server management project, the Tam Group did not at first appear to be the obvious choice: The company is dedicated to the IBM AS/400 as its preferred server solution and the AS/400 is not "traditionally" seen as a Web server. "It took some pretty long meetings to convince Copart of the Web capabilities of the AS/400," says Covington, senior marketing executive at the Tam Group. "The basic view is that the AS/400 is strictly a green-screen application with little or no GUI capabilities. We demonstrated all the AS/400 could do, including communicating peer-to-peer with other production machines without data transition." "We had an idea that we wanted whatever Web server we got to be able to integrate with our AS/400s so that we could use the databased information housed there for applications," says David Bauer, chief technology officer at Copart. "We had started talking about building a Web site off of NT, and they suggested using our AS/400 and told us about other companies that had already done it. It turned out to be excellent and fast server for this purpose." +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
