I sent the following to Greg yesterday in regards to his article (I'm TRYING to do my part John ;-) ) Hi Greg, Per your piece in the January NT magazine: ---- Lots of GREAT stuff deleted <G> ------ < I know what you all are thinking: Greg was brainwashed by a day inside IBM. I realize the true test is not what somebody says in a presentation, but how well the thing really works in the real world. I hope to get a chance to try some of this stuff firsthand -- especially the NT integration pieces -- and I'll let you know what I find> So, what's the word dude ? :-) I have been working with the AS/400 1 year short of it's day one release (we missed it in our CA budget...) and as you note; it has been an incredible machine. I personally was in charge of our move from the S/38 to the AS/400 and it was a PIECE OF CAKE, and that was back in the days when stuff like this was a NIGHTMARE on most platforms. I have been in charge of 6 system upgrades (different models), the most recent being our move from the CISC 320 to the RISC 530. That weekend we replaced the hardware AND the operating system and had NO problems. No recompiling, etc. in the move from one underlying chip architecture to another. Love IBM, hate IBM, as a person of your credentials knows - that is TRULY awesome ! Have you had time to dig into more (you should - we may NEVER see NT 5.0 <BG>)... I am running NT workstation 4.0 on my Toshiba Tecra 730CDT (we installed it, this was BEFORE you could get a notebook with NT from a vendor !) and LOVE it so please don't think I am narrow-minded as far as MS goes. What I HATE is the position they put us in WAITING for SOMETHING while we suffer through 95 and 98... I just get sick of all the BS publicity in regards to MS and am glad to see a fair piece ! Did you know that MS runs THEIR business on AS/400's ? This is a FACT, although MS would just as soon NO ONE KNOW. The way I see it is the day MS can provide a scalable, reliable, enterprise ready network OS, they will be running THEIR business on it since they HATE IBM ;-) What do you think ? Some VERY interesting links to check out in regards to Microsoft and NT (I received these both in the last 2 days)... http://www.ncworldmag.com/ncw-06-1998/ncw-06-nextten.html and http://www.aberdeen.com/research/comp/viewpnts/1997/v10n20/97090178.htm Let me know how things are going and what you think ! Take care ! Chuck I got the following back: Hi Chuck - Thanks for the email - I appreciate it. The AS400 stuff is turning out to be a chicken and egg situation for us - no expertise, therefore no customers, therefore we're not building expertise. I need a catalyst to get it going and haven't found one yet. I like the articles. The NCWorld article has some really nice analysis but it seems a little too biased against Microsoft. The Abdereen Group article is dead bang right on. I'd encourage all SCC Employees to read them both. I'm ccing all our employees and Al Gillen and Roseann Brooks at ENT. Al is ENT's Editor in Chief and Roseann is ENT's Managing Editor. Give Al permission and they might publish part of your letter in the mailbag. - Greg PRETTY interesting, eh ? At least positive/encouraging response/folks listening !!!
