RPG dates

I am a RPG newbie and I was hoping someone could explain a little about
PF dates. I am teaching my self RPG using Judy Yaeger Programming in RPG
IV by Duke Press. In all of her DDS PF examples she defines a date as a
character field. Is this the way it is usually done? Or do you use data
type L for dates instead? I am trying to come up with advantages and
disadvantages to doing it one way over the other and since I have so
little experience I am not sure which I want to use.
