DDS specs for printer files:

Can I use REF or REFFLD to reference fields from an RPG program?  

I have an RPG program that uses data from several files, and has work
fields and totals, etc.  If I write an externally described printer file I
have to set all of these field sizes and types again if I want them to
print out in the report, and that doesn't seem right.  I have the feeling
there is something I don't understand.

Any ideas?
