I don't like this choice at all; it will do little for you in the long run, but you might consider a solution like this, for the problem stated: find a way to add 40 to your YY field. thus, (19)98 becomes 38 and (20)02 becomes 42, thus your sort works fine from 1940 through 2039, the same window as IBM is using.
