john, we are runnning an s20 with a firewall. we also received an ipcs,   
but are not using it. we were told that the ipcs will not support two   
100m ethernet cards without running an nt kernal. we did not wish to   
persue this route, and for ease of installation, we went with an fsiop   
that we had in one of the other systems that will support two 10m cards   
with ease.
     
after some fiddling around, we are up and running with this. we do not   
have a keyboard and mouse hooked into the fsiop(can you?), nor did we   
with the ipcs. all administration is done through a java enabled browser.   
but you probably know that already.
     
after several weeks of working with this, i have found no need to be   
connected directly to the fsiop/ipcs.
     
if you have any questions let me know. be glad to share my *limited*

oh, yah, i am relatively new to the list, and this is my first post. i   
should introduce myself, russ solomon. i have been working with 400's for   
almost 6 years now. most of my time has been as an operator. I have also   
worked quite a bit with security, and i have just started a new position   
as a system admin. being trained as we speak! i still consider myself a   
novice, and probably will for a long time. always seems that there is   
more to learn...
     
a bit about our current environment. we are running 7 as400's   
currently(including the internet machine). we are a catalog company, so   
you can imagine what kind of environment we work in. all of our machines   
are at v4r2. just got there as of three weeks ago. i *will* be asking   
questions.

We recently purchased a model 170 with the AS/400 Firewall. The IPCS it 
runs on is evidently the new one that would also run NT. It came with 
connections and cables to hook up a keyboard/mouse and monitor.
     
I connected a keyboard, mouse and monitor to see what it would do. When 
it's booting up, I get a couple of meaningful screens, including one with 
OS/2 Warp on the display. But once it's up and running it just displays 
some window outlines, and other shadowy images.
     
I thought it might be interesting to be able to monitor a little better 
what is happening on the firewall. Does anyone have any ideas on how I 
might be able to make those devices useful?
