I think it was System/3 and 36, then System 38. The Sys/38 had
S36 emulation from almost day one. How could it emulate a
machine that didn't already exist?
So I agree with you, not your friend.
Of course, it could be argued that the 36 was not in the direct
blood line at all. But did become a relative by marriage when
the 236 & 436 where introduced. And then with V3R7 running SSP,
we now have inbreeding. And without the normal genetic
consequences!
