As a DEC VMS maven, I've had similar experiences during VMS upgrades.
With current hardware, however, they rarely require more than
30 minutes. There is now a very robust software system
installer, PCSI, and I'm very happy with that.

On NT, on a new machine, it rarely takes more than 2 hours
to install the base os, whether workstation or server. To
be sure, I've had to repeat the install on numerous occasions :-).
