Dear InfoWorld, Someone ought to inform Mr. John Rando that if he intends to " lead [64-bit computing] with Alpha", he had better forget about the unavailable Merced chip and instead concentrate on a proven architecture that already has a 2+ year track record of delivering blistering 64 bit server peformance. Yes, while the Wintel industry was raucously touting it's (somewhat painfull) migration from a 16 bit tojust a 32 bit Operating systems IBM's AS/400 quietly moved from it's 8 year old 48 bit IMPI architecture to the new 64 bit RISC architecture. This migration was made virtually without reprogramming even while our enhanced Operating System continued to support all our existing software. And best of all we still don't reboot our entire system every time an application program hiccups. But given that Compaq uses AS/400's in their company, maybe Mr. Rando knows this already. jte -- John Earl Lighthouse Software Inc. 8514 71st NW Gig Harbor, WA 98335 253-858-7388 johnearl@lns400.com -- +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
