Hi,

So here's the problem. When IBM introduced the AS/400, with software
tiered by model number, they provided the system value QMODEL so anyone
with an IQ greater than 60 could find the model number.

In V3R1, IBM "simplified" the model structure by adding new models with
many feature codes under each model. The plan was that:

Model Tier
200 P10
300 P20
310 P30
320 P40

The problem was that:

1. There was no simple (a/k/a system value) to find the processor feature.
2. The plan didn't hold, and multiple software tiers started to creep
across all models.

Pete, there is nothing simple about:

> Try a WRKHDWRSC *PRC

So in response to the fact that this had gotten complicated, IBM decided to
give us a way to find the model/feature easily.

Some time ago, the plan was to put out a system value with the
processor/feature in a future release. However, the aircraft carrier USS
Rochester does not steer easily, and it was recognized that this would take
some time. As in interim solution, the data area concept came up. The
data area is created/updated at IPL time, to show the processor/feature.

It is true that you can change it, but for someone trying to find out the
processor/feature of a given system to report to a software vendor, it is
useful. It does not provide a security mechanism.

The problem with the PTF is that it has not been put on a cum tape/CD!
