Again another option is to take advantage of being able to send different numbers of parameters to an RPG program. It is, admittedly, a 'cute' technique, requiring special, esoteric, knowledge. It happens to be a technique many of our programs use. They have a return code, then a data structure or several variables. If the parameter count = 1, this means shutdown. I agree—this is not an easy maintenance technique. It falls into that category of 'CUTE', meaning unmaintainable. However, it's present in lots of our stuff, mostly things generated by Genesis, a code generation tool (won't say what I think of the product—oops, guess I kinda just did! <g>).
