Suppose you're aware that some older AS/400's (9402/9404 B/C/D/E models
where the comm line is connected to the MFIOP I believe) can't handle
over 19.2Kbps on the comm ports ?

If you use these 7852-400's on them you're OK setting the dip switches
to 19.2Kbps to limit the speed of an outgoing call to 19.2Kbps, but it
ignores the switch settings on incoming calls and will try to negotiate,
and often succeed, speeds between 19.2Kbps and 33.6Kbps, then the old
AS/400 sits there stunned and can't communicate with the modem.
For these customers with old AS/400's you need to change the modem's
programming to limit all connections to 19.2Kbps by changing the setting
of the S48 register to 19.
