Hello John,

The last time I needed to do this sort of thing I had to use the RTVMBRD 
command.  It returns the FILETYPE -- 
*SRC or *DATA.

You could also use the Retrieve Database File Description (QDBRTVFD) API for 
the same purpose but the CL 
command is much, MUCH easier!
