(: As smooth as most CUM installs are, I'm still too cowardly to trust the system to take care of itself unattended as it performs brain surgery on itself. That said... One nice option with the current PTF structure is that you can follow the instructions and take the option to NOT auto-IPL. This loads all of the PTFs and prepares the system to install the PTFs during the next unattended (ie 'normal') IPL. What this means is that I can load the PTFs during the week (say 2 PM on a Thursday afternoon), and NOT IPL! Then, Saturday night the System Operator performs his regular weekly IPL, and the System applies all of the PTFs and wakes up normally. Quoting Neil, the operator then does the post-surgery check (also covered in the instructions that come with the CUM package): "Whenever the system comes back up, you can use GO LICPGM, #50 to check for messages to make sure the apply was successful, and/or use DSPPTF to make sure all PTF's are either Temporarily Applied, Permanently Applied, or Superseded (and you may have some PSP - cover letter only PTF's that show status of Cover Letter Only). "You can also do DSPLOG QHST and display from the time you start the IPL to apply the PTF's." Notice that I did NOT leave the machine unattended as it performs brain surgery on itself! (; The operator is told that the IPL will 'take longer than normal,' and to call if any strange messages appear. This has also been used to apply CUM packages on our remote machines: The 'hands-and-eyes' person at the far end loads the CD, I run the procedure to load the PTFs, and the operator monitors the procedure during the next IPL. --Paul E Musselman PaulMmn@ix.netcom.com +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
