The limit of 32 joined files or 32 physical files in a multi-record format
logical file goes way back.  (Multi-record LF started at the beginning of
System/38, and join was a CPF release 7.0 implementation.)

I don't see any huge cry from AS/400 users to increase that, and I suspect
that it would be a big effort for IBM to do.

I wouldn't hold my breath.
