John, >From the common programming APIs manual: A mutex (or pthread_mutex from the mutex function names) is a mutual exclusion mechanism for synchronizing between threads, like a fast memory lock. There are functions to initialize, destroy, lock, unlock, and test a mutex. Mutexes should be used to serialize access to shared global storage.
