Hello Everybody:

We operate nine different companies from one AS/400 model 500 V3R7. At a recent MIS department meeting we discussed setting up a seperate subsystem for each company so that we can schedule simultaneous jobs between companies without scheduling conflicts. There would be some other benefits as well. My question is, what kind of a performance hit can we expect take if we go ahead with these plans? Most of the companies are very small, the largest only has about 30 users.

As Kathleen said, I assume this is for batch work. An alternative that we like for batch work is to use the dynamic pools feature of AutoTune, the dynamic performance manager from Help Systems. Basically, you set up job queues (which could be named for your separate companies) in the AutoTune subsystem. Then, when a job is released from one of those queues, a brand new system pool is created for that job alone. When the job is done (and no other jobs are waiting), the pool is removed.

The big benefit here is that memory used by the batch job is returned to the system when the job is done. In the scenario you describe, you'd be reserving 2-3 meg for each subsystem. Maybe not an issue, but on some machines you need all the help you can get.

Although not everyone agrees that using something like AutoTune or Charlie is a "good thing", we'd not do without it. And the builtin system tuner does not have this dynamic pool feature.

Just a thought
