Token Ring does require a MAU. You can skip a hub with Ethernet, and
then only with a crossover cable.

I believe token ring requires some of the electronics in the MAU to
exchange the token from machine to machine.

You may want to call your local used computer parts vendor. I'm sure
that used token ring hubs are becoming more and more available as
companies are switching to Ethernet and fast Ethernet.
