Thanks Buck,

BTW that last line wasn't a pun was it? :)

There is another factor in your cost equation: CA/400. I'm just a lowly
freelancer
supporting a few model 200 shops that upgraded from a S/36. They still have
twinax/3xtwin
card connection and no CA/400. Add that to the per seat cost.

When TCP/IP is introduced I'll try to convince the paying client that their
money is worth
the effort. But the truth of the matter is that I'll still spend the same
amount of time on
a project, I'll just use the saved time to clean up old code or add another
bell/whistle to
the project at hand, or give it more thought and hopefully reduce future
maintenance. And
yes, the customer will get more per dollar spent on the labor cost.

I'm reminded of a lesson in Economics 101 titled: "Curve of diminishing
returns". Spend x
dollars to get x return, spend 2x dollars to get 1.5x return, and so on. In
that vain it
may be better suited to convince companies to acquire CODE/400 as a perk, like
flex benefits
or stock options, to attract talent instead of trying to quantifying the labor
cost savings.
There's an idea! If enough keyboard bangers turn down work if it's not provided
it will be
part of the compensation package. ;-)

Tongue still in cheek (sort of)
