This was a sequence number (defined elsewhere as YYYYMMDDHHMMSSXX), and I started out ending up processing about 500 records per second, which was a little more than expected. I talked the designers into allowing alpha for the XX part. Then the program got put on a faster machine and started processing about 900 per second and getting up to KK, KL, and KM for the second time. second following a processor upgrade. Peter H.
