Using telnet or your browser you can set IP/subnet, etc. The netport has three 
ports, two parallel ones, one serial. Those you can also set up via telnet 
(baud 
rate, etc.) Plus it gives you a status display to see if the printers are 
online etc.

COM1_PASSTHRU are defined within the netport as it's printqueues.
Imagine a LPD server with 3 queues named LPT1_PASSTHRU, 
LPT2_PASSTHRU and COM1_PASSTHRU. Thats what the netport is doing.
As you put it, they are keywords the netport recognises.

In other words, you can connect up to three printers to the netport, define 
three 
OUTQ's on the 400, there's your bank of printers...
