Dave,

Don't feel too bad, the %EDITC and %EDITW built ins work great but the edit 
code/word 
must be a character constant.  We used the APIs on V3R7 to get around this.  I 
guess 
someone decided that saving a few nano seconds was worth crippling the built-in 
function.

Yes I have done it as a prototyped procedure to mimic what we poor V3R2 cant get
(as in V4R1 %EDITC %EDITW).
