Build in functions -- MIDRANGE-L

I have a RPGLE for V4R1.  I use the build in functions %EDITC, %EDIT, and
%LEN.  None of them works.
For edit functions, I got the following messages (even though I copy exact
sample in the infoseeker)

1-The token is not valid; token is ignored.
2-A right parenthesis is expected but is not found.
3-The end of the expression is expected.

Did I do something wrong?
