We are going through a similar exercise and are using a dedicated PC running
LINUX as a file/print server and router.

You can use a router ($700-$800 for Netopia) to act as a proxy server to hide
your actual network or in our case we chose to install a dedicated 486 running
LINUX to perform proxy/print/HTTP serving taking the load off the AS/400.

Although LINUX technically is a free OS, companies package together LINUX with
applications and provide support services and charge for this packageing and
distribution. We chose the Caldera Standard version ($399 list) at the
headquarters for it's inclusion of the Netscape FastTrack Web server. The Base
version ($59 list) uses the Apache server and although the branch locations
don't
do any web serving we use it for the proxy/print serving.

This works well for the small branch offices (5 users each at 3 locations) with
static IP address via ISDN to TELNET and I have a similar setup at home (static
IP address).

Let us know what you finally configure and use.
