My prediction for 1998 is that the customer base of IBM midrange is going to express quite vocally their dissatisfaction in the fracturing of the AS/400 markets. A few years ago, the product line was sold as a "smooth" transition from small turn-key processors to the high end, just by moving the software from one hardware level to another. Even the S/36 people weren't left out in the cold. Now, going from end of the spectrum to the other seems to be about as difficult as migrating through the fantasy universes of the Unix world. I predict there will be customers who complain that there are too many choices to make an intelligent one.
