With a user index, you can use the APIs or use the C/400 functional interface. 
Effectively the C interface is MI, but its a little easier to use control logic 
with C. With C you can also get at the associated space of the User Index. This 
allows you to use the Index to store the "key" to your data, and then store the 
data in the associated space via some kind of offset or link-list algorithm. 
That's what Message Files (*MSGF) are.
