You could use select count(*). If it's greater than 0, then it exists.
I've resorted to this a few times when working with SqlAnywhere. I
suspect it might not perform as well as a more traditional approach such
as RPG's SETLL op code with a resulting indicator, particularly if there
are multiple records.
