VARPG '%character' Event -- MIDRANGE-L

Afternoon All,

Has anyone used the VARPG %character Event field.  

Here is what I have:

D %character            S               2A

C       %character      IFEQ    '06'
C                       EXSR   Validate
C                       ENDIF

It just ignores this code.

Any suggestions as to what is wrong?
