One possibility is to use the heap now available in ILE RPG.

You can ALLOC some structure with n occurrences.
Later you can REALLOC this thing to m occurences,
where m can be less or greater than the initial n.

BTW: I am not a 'native RPG writer', my background is the
Algol family of languages. And concerning language constructs,
even C is some relative to this forefather.

So I have not tested my proposal.
