I know exactly what you mean.  But, these days, optimizing back-ends
are good - damn good in fact.  What it means is that when using high
optimization, the final machine code bears little resemblance to the
original source code.  It may not be possible to determine exactly
what sequence of machine instructions corresponds to a particular
HLL statement.
