AMEN!!!  I have been designing DB systems with this strategy for years.
They bitch and moan (b&m) initially but when it comes down to entering
data (or making sure the dates are correct, especially in some of my
medical applications where I must USE the previous century for the
DOB when it is automated) it provides good data integrity.  I BELIEVE!!
