IBM has published an APAR on Client API's but it didn't help us.

Any TELNET connection is assigned, randomly, a QPADEVnnnn device name. We
don't have control of this, AFAIK. We've needed, however, a consistent
identifier for each display session. We will use the IP address, which for
internal connections is always the same for a particular PC (generally
speaking--there are probably other scenarios that dynamically allocate
addresses that will defeat even this scheme).

There are PTF's that let you identify these QPADEVnnnn names and find out
what IP address is tied to them. For V3R2, the PTFs are SF38876, SF38885,
SF38886, & SF38688. Equivalent for V3R7 is, I think, SF42477 & SF42086.

SF38876 contains info on the API function QDCRDEVD (Retrieve Device
Description). Additional fields have been added to format DEVD0600, that
can give you the IP address corresponding to the device name.

Again, we (AS/400 programmers) have no control over the device names assigned.

Also, the same problem occurs with Workstation Gateway, the on-the-fly Web
server for 5250 screens. And furthermore, the above API does not help here,
either. Rather, you have to be sure your signon screens match the AS/400
default in the upper portion. Then you need to get info out of the WSG
log--see the TCP/IP Reference for more info or mail me privately.

Cheers
