Another choice might be to just run the select against the members in the physical file with no K, building a new output file as you go. Earlier, on a similar question, it was also suggested sending the selected records into a dataque, and then starting as many processes as needed to read the que and actually write the records to the output file. Processing the records in huge chunks is much faster than bouncing all over the file's member in some sort of proscribed order.
